Matters Arising for the Royal Swedish Academy

Extract of an email from Gareth J. Evans to Myron W. Evans, 3 July 2007:

My view Myron is that Nobel Prize standards have dropped because:

  1. It is awarded annually - it should only be awarded when a piece of work deserves it (to maintain standards).
  2. There aren't the calibre of scientists around that there were in the past. The number of universities may have exploded worldwide but the relative standing of CORE science departments has declined with many fine departments, like our own, closing completely. There are far too many pseudo science subjects and the core sciences have suffered as a consequence.
  3. Scholarship, for its own sake, and freedom of thought have been replaced by a culture built on research grants (revenue) and safe research with a low risk of failure. This may be the only way to survive but it is not the way to make progress.

We saw this starting to happen a long time ago. By now the decline is so bad that the ruling scientific elite have completely lost the ability to take the core science subjects forward. Only the Internet and some natural genius has prevented a complete rot.

Best, Gareth
